DPS Health is Proud to Announce San Jose Medical Group

will pilot Virtual Lifestyle Management™ Service

(Los Angeles, CA) – July 22nd, 2011 – DPS Health and San Jose Medical Group, are pleased to announce the pilot of DPS Health’s Virtual Lifestyle Management™ (VLM) Service to patients with or at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. San Jose Medical Group is interested in evaluating the impact of VLM on patient health and engagement through the clinically-linked, internet-based, weight management service that helps overweight adults become more active, eat better, lose weight and live healthier.

Through VLM, users learn how to eat a healthy diet and get more physically active through media-rich, interactive lessons, streaming audio, interactive workbooks, plus nutrition and activity planning and tracking tools. Users can track their eating and physical activity to easily monitor their behavioral trends and long-term outcomes, and also have access to email and chat rooms, greatly increasing support and creating an efficient flow of information.

"We are always looking for ways to provide better care for our patients.” said Dr. Dean Didech, Chief Medical Officer of San Jose Medical Group. “We believe VLM can help our overweight patients learn about physical activity and nutrition and receive the support they need to lose weight and live healthier lives."

VLM is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a weight management approach developed by the University of Pittsburgh faculty under a federal research grant from the National Institutes of Health. Through web-based technology, VLM delivers the DPP research-proven lifestyle intervention, aiming to enhance the efficiency and success of healthcare provider weight management programs. To create VLM, the University of Pittsburgh, along with DPS Health, worked to improve patient engagement through web-based learning, tracking, and motivation.

“Working with a progressive medical group like San Jose Medical Group to bring VLM to their patients is exciting,” said Neal Kaufman, M.D., M.P.H., founder and CEO of DPS Health. “We see great potential in this partnership, and look forward to working with everyone at SJMG to help patients change their behaviors to improve their long term health.”

Deeply concerned about the epidemic of weight-related illness, rising health costs and chronic conditions, Kaufman founded DPS Health to address serious chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, in order to help clinicians more effectively improve health outcomes of their patients. The impetus for this came from the findings of the landmark NIH-funded Diabetes Prevention Program. Kaufman is a proven leader who has built a record of trust through local, state and national efforts to improve public health.

About San Jose Medical Group

San Jose Medical Group (SJMG) is a multidisciplinary medical group that was established in 1955 as a professional corporation governed by the physicians. From the beginning, the founding members of SJMG determined the doctor-patient relationship to be the foundation of our mission. It was and continues to be "To Serve the Patient." Today, in spite of formidable challenges, we strive to provide the best care possible to our 125,000 patients. Over the years, we have grown into a 75-physician organization as a core unit, along with several hundred affiliated and contracted physicians who join us to serve our patients.

About DPS Health

DPS Health, founded in 2004, extends the practice of medicine to meet current and future health threats from obesity. The increasing impact of patient lifestyle on obesity, ahealth outcomes and healthcare costs requires new and improved ways for clinicians to engage and motivate overweight patients to adopt and sustain health promoting behaviors. DPS Health creates software solutions using an innovative, flexible and scalable technological platform (Behavior Change Suite™) that implements research-proven best practices of lifestyle coaching and self-management support. In one example, DPS Health worked with faculty from the University of Pittsburgh to develop the web-based Virtual Lifestyle Management (VLM) service which is based upon the Diabetes Prevention Program (also developed by the University of Pittsburgh). DPS Health is a licensee of this program for delivery through VLM service. In another example of the interventions built on the BCS platform, DPS Health has developed the Physical Activity Data Warehouse™, and the Lifecorder Online™ web applications with the Suzuken Company.
